Acrylic on wide stretchers. Sides painted black. It is 40x60 inches.
After Hurricane Katrina, I became involved in large canvases to fill the walls of New Orleans and surroundings, where cherished art had once hung. I resisted painting the after effects of the storm and chose this scene as my way of working through that time.
The Mardi Gras after Katrina was inspiring for me. I was up on a ladder photographing a parade on St Charles when a band encircled me and played while I took pictures of them. I have studied enough pictures of Pops to paint him from memory. I put him in the middle of the band where I had been that Mardi Gras.
I hope it finds a good home.
